let the cost of one file be x and cost of one pen be y

then according to the question, Sanjeet paid $32.85 for a file and 3 identical pens:-

x+3y=32.85

x=32.85-3y……………..equation (1)

now in question it is given that ,Leon paid $83.50 for 2 such files and 8 such pens:-

2x+8y=83.50……………equation (2)

put the value of x from equation (1) in equation (2)

2(32.85-3y)+8y=83.50

65.7-6y+8y=83.50

2y=83.50-65.7

2y=17.8

y=17.8/2

y=8.9 (cost of pen)
