On a long road trip, a family used 12 gallons of gas. At the end of the trip, there were 3 gallons left in the tank. How many gallons of gas were in the tank at the start of the trip?

Gas left at the end of trip = 3 gallons 

So, gas at the start of trip = gas used + gas left 

= (12 + 3) gallons 

= 15 gallons 

 

Thus, gas at the start of trip was 15 gallons.
