In order to solve this equation we need to have variables x on one side and the numbers on the other side of the equation. Numbers and variables that will change sides will have their sign changed from + to - and vice versa. 

3x-5=9

3x=9+5

3x=14

Divide both sides with 3.

3x/3 = 14/3

x=14/3
