Given:

Mr. Miller picked 43 tomatoes

The tomatoes were categorized in groups of 5.

Determine how many groups were made, and how many tomatoes were left over.

Solution:

In order to determine how many groups were made, we divide the total number of tomatoes that were picked by 5, since it was group of 5. 43 is not divisible by 5, in this case, it will have a remainder. In order to easily answer the problem, we will take 3 away from 43, leaving behind 40, 3 tomatoes are left over from the total of 43 tomatoes.

Now that we have 40, we can easily determine the number of groups that were made.

= 40 /5

= 8 groups

8 groups were made containing 5 tomato each, and there is a left over of 3 tomatoes.
