Most metals are not magnetic but iron shows magnetic properties because of the way electrons in iron atom behaves. The electrons in the iron atom tends to have the ability to align in one direction, such that one side of the atom has negative charge and one side has positive charge. When these tiny magnets line up, their combined attraction creates magnetism.
