Okay so we know that the ratio tulips:dahlias its 8:9. In order to find out how many were there we can follow this way.
Lets first write an equation, with an unknown x. Since the ratio is 8:9, lets take them 8x and 9x. The sum of both of them will be equal to the total of the flowers. So:
8x+9x=799
17x=799
Divide both sides with 17.
17x/17 = 799/17
x = 47
8x are the tulips=47*8=376 tulips
9x are the dahlias=47*9=423 dahlias
