Given the function:

f(x) = 5x+2

g(x) = ½ +4

Find g(f(12))

Looking at g(x), we cannot substitute the value of f(12) since there is no variable x in the equation. The composition of a function will only exists if there is a value of x in both equations, therefore the answer will still be g(x). In order to fully understand this, here is the equation.

First find f(12) meaning 12 will be substituted to each variable x.

F(12) = 5(12) + 2

F(12) = 62

Next  substitute the value of f(12) which is 62 in the function g(x), but since there is no x variable, it cannot be substituted.

g(12) = ½ + 4

g(12) =9/2 or 4.5
