Witch hunting reached its peak during the early modern period, roughly from the late 15th century to the late 17th century, in Europe. During this time, the most intense witch trials occurred in the Holy Roman Empire, which covered much of Germany, Switzerland, and parts of France and Italy. Germany, in particular, had some of the most severe witch trials, including the notorious Würzburg and Bamberg trials. Other countries with notable witch hunts included Scotland, England, and France. The American colonies also experienced a period of witch hunts, with the most famous being the Salem witch trials in Massachusetts in 1692.
