Given the equations:

2x + 3y = 13

x - y = -2

Solve.

Solution:

In order to solve the system of linear equation, we substitute the value of y of the second equation to the first equation. To do so we must solve for y for the 2nd equation. This can be done by transposing -y and -2 to the opposite sides of the equation, hence we must take note that in transposing a number, the sign changes.

x - y = -2

y = x + 2

Substitute to the first equation.

2x + 3 ( x + 2 ) = 13

2x + 3x + 6  = 13

5x + 6 = 13

Transpose 6 to the other side of the equation, and divide both sides by 5 in order to cancel out 5x, leaving behind x.

5x = 13 - 6

5x = 8

5x/5 = 8/5

x = 8/5

Final answer:

x = 8/5
