The level of involvement of the British Monarch in colonial affairs varied over time and wasn't as direct or continuous as it might seem. In the early years of colonization, the monarchy had more direct control, but over time as the colonies developed they gained more autonomy in their local governance. However, the British Monarch maintained a degree of control through appointed colonial governors and policies set by Parliament.

Colonists did have some say in their local governments through elected assemblies and local governance structures. However, their representation in the British Parliament was limited or absent leading to tensions and grievances about taxation and laws being imposed on them without their direct representation or consent. This lack of direct representation in Parliament was a significant factor leading to colonial discontent and ultimately played a role in the American Revolution.
