Early investigators thought the oxygen produced by photosynthetic plants came from carbon dioxide. in fact, it comes from water.

During photosynthesis, plants take in carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O) . Then, the water is oxidized, while the CO2 is reduced.  Due to this water transforms into oxygen and the carbon dioxide into glucose.
