 B. plants and animals

When Christopher Columbus made his voyages to the New World, he did not find the great riches like gold and precious stones that he had expected, which he thought would be immediately lucrative for Spain. Instead, much of what he encountered and reported back to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain were new and exotic plants and animals unknown in Europe at that time. He and his crew discovered various new food crops (such as maize, which became very important to European agriculture), tobacco (which became a craze in Europe), and he noted the diversity of wildlife in the new lands, including the vast numbers of sea and land creatures.
