The pulmonary capillaries in the alveoli are located in between the pulmonary arteries and pulmonary veins. The serve as the the junction between pulmonary arteries and veins, as they are blood vessels in which the microscopic red blood cells are able to pass through. The alveoli within the lungs are tiny air sacs which participate in gas exchange, wherein the inhaled oxygen which comes from the environment, is exchanged with carbon dioxide from the blood. This exchange occurs between the pulmonary capillaries and alveoli. Millions of alveoli located within the lungs, with their thin walls are covered by pulmonary capillaries. The contact between the pulmonary capillaries and alveoli allows gas exchange.
