Cell respiration is a process that happens inside cells in which nutrients, particularly glucose, are broken down to release energy. This energy is then used to power up various activities within the cell and throughout the organism. In simpler terms, it is like a power plant operation within each cell, converting fuel (food) into usable energy (ATP - adenosine triphosphate).

To understand why it is needed, think of your cells as little engines that require energy to function. Just like a car engine needs gasoline to run, your cells need energy to perform all their necessary tasks, such as moving, dividing, and making proteins. Cell respiration is the process by which this energy is produced and distributed to where it's needed.
