The author build suspense in the story almost on all aspects, starting of with a strong wind blowing, this may signify certain stuffs if you look closely and analyze its meaning. It can be interpreted as an occurrence that is about to come, which may be a typhoon, hurricane, or in their case, a mysterious man lurking in the dark. By describing the clothing of the stranger, it signifies a tension and uncertainty of what is about to come, but all of these can be excluded if only they knew that someone is coming home at that hour. Since they don't the the most important part on how the author built suspense on the story is by describing the anticipation of Clara and her sisters, as they hear the knock sound on their doorsteps.
