In adding or subtracting fractions with different denominators, we must first find the least common denominator of the fraction. Then we divide the denominator of the first fraction to the LCD, and multiply the quotient to the numerator. Do the same for the second fraction, and then we can now combine them.

Example:

½ + ¼

 LCD = 4

½ = 2/4

¼ = ¼

= 2/4 + ¼

= ¾
