Given the equation:

-4y - 11x = 36
Can be written as,
y = -11 / 4x  - 9

20 = -10x - 10y
Can be written as
y = -x - 2

Solve using elimination.

Solution:

In order to solve using elimination, we equate the values of y, into a single equation.

-x - 2 = -11 / 4x - 9

Transpose -9 and - x to the  opposite sides of the equation, hence it must be taken to note that in transposing a number, the sing changes.

-2 + 9 = -11 / 4x + x

x can be written as 4/4x

7 = -11 / 4x + 4/4x

7 = -7/4x

Multiply both sides by -4/7 to cancel out -7/4 leaving behind the value of x.

(-4/7)(7) = (-4/7)(-7/4x)

x = -4

Final answer:
x = -4
