So we already have the equation written: -10p+9p=12

Since on the left side of this equation we have the same unknown variable which is p,  we can just substract the numbers before the variables. Lets factor p on the left side of the equation.

(-10+9)p = 12

Divide both sides (-10+9).

(-10+9)p/(-10+9) = 12/(-10+9)

p= 12/(-10+9)

p=12/(-1)

p=-12
